How To Design Incredible Images With Canva

how to create incredible images with canva

Hello, there! Today I want to share with you one of the most valuable online resource that I use on a daily basis: Canva. In case you don’t know, Canva.com is a free and online design tool. Have you ever wondered where bloggers get those beautiful Pinterest images? Well, I am pretty sure most of them use Canva to create their designs.

This is a super intuitive platform, however, I have decided to show you some tips and tricks on using the website.

This post contains screenshots from Canva.com. They are all in Spanish, as I am using it from Spain and the website is taking into account my location. However, the platform is also in English.

Choose your background picture

Even though it is not required in order to create a great design, I would recommend you to use a background picture. Preferably, it would be related to your post content and match your blog’s colors.

I know that there are bloggers with really good photography skills, but don’t worry if you are not one of them. If you don’t like any photos taken by you, then there are a lot of websites that offer free images for bloggers. These websites offer free images that don’t have any restrictions on their usage. This means that you can you use them on your blog without having to worry about any permission rights.

One of my favorites is Stocksnap.io where you can find thousands of free images that are great to create your own designs. Most of them are a simple combination of objects with a light background. This makes it perfect to write your desired text and design your own layout. To search for your photographs you have a convenient browser. Look for a specific work and dozens of images will pop up!

Also, if you don’t mind adding another subscription to your list, I love IvoryMix.com. This site offers over 300 girly-like pictures with lots of colors. The best of it all is that most images show where your text should be placed, so you won’t even have to think about that when designing your own.

Decide what Canva image you want to create

Now that you have chosen your photo we can get into business! Open Canva.com and, if you haven’t already, create an account. It is completely free. I am sure you will use it so much that it will be worthy. Click on the green button on the left corner to create a new design.

Here, you will be able to choose the dimensions of your new creation. Canva also makes it easier for you. It has predesigned sizes depending on the social media you are going to use your picture for.

For this example, I am going to choose a design to post on Pinterest.

Some features you can use in any Canva design are:

  • Rotate and resize any element
  • Cut your image and add filters
  • Recolor illustrations and geometrical elements
  • Add text using hundreds of free fonts
  • Use predetermined designs totally free

Try different layouts

First, you will get to the following screen:

As you can see on the left there are different headers below the browser. The first of them gives you the option to use a template to create your design. The best thing about Canva is that it already has beautiful creations that are totally free to use. You can also get some inspiration out of them (which is what I normally would do).

There are so many different options with Canva. If you are a creative person, click the “Elements” tab where you can pick from many different things to combine in your layout. You can find illustrations, images and different shapes to use. Nearly all of them can be recolored, which gives you a great deal of freedom.

For my design, I have just used my chosen image from Stocksnap.io and added two pink rectangles (both at the top and the bottom). It is a super simple layout, but that will be enriched with the fonts.

Fonts on Canva

Canva provides a wide arrange of fonts for your text!

You can find hundreds of predetermined texts with different font combinations, such as the ones you can find on the picture on the right.

This is a great way to find which font works well with the one that you chose. Some of my favorite combinations are:

  • Selima + League Spartan
  • Lato + Playlist Script
  • Monserrat light + Savonne
  • Glacial Indifference + Yellowtail

All of them are free in Canva and the perfect way to add personality to your image.

Tips and the final result

Finally, some tips to make your designs as professional as possible:

  1. Use a maximum of three different colors for your text. Also, make sure they match your background image if you have one.
  2. Never forget to add your website somewhere in your design
  3. Make it visual and easy to read
  4. Choose wisely the size depending on the purpose of the design

Remember, an image is worth a thousand words!

So, finally, this is what I came up with. Pin it if you like it!

  5. Great guide! I’m a big Canva fan, but will check out your tips on StockSnap and IvoryMix. Canva is so great to with it’s function to resize images, so you can make one for Pinterest and then resize for Instagram, for example. This will be very helpful for new bloggers!
